Home care or senior living? Which one should we choose? Sometimes, it's hard to know. You will get many differing opinions, but the truth of the matter is that it is unique for every person depending on what’s important to them and their quality of life. Let's look at the differences between care at home and senior care in our community.
Care at Home for Seniors
Many people whose loved ones need a bit of assistance to live independently in their own homes choose an option called Home Care. Home Care is a great option for older adults that may need a little bit of assistance to live independently but there is a point where it may not be the best option. Check out our Resource page where you can view a Senior Care Comparison Worksheet and a Senior Care Checklist that helps people weigh weather staying at home is no longer the best option.
You may also want to consider the following:
- Although Home Care may be cheaper on the surface, the home may need fitting with ramps, railings and chairlifts, which can become costly and difficult to organize.
- Many home care agencies change from week to week and this can be unsettling for older people as well as their families. If home care is opted for, make sure all financial options are discussed and that everyone is happy to proceed.
- Consistency and reliable staffing are often an issue with Home Care as well as training. Being part of a 25+ year old organization provides our community with top-notch processes, protocols, back-up plans, expert-training and trusted care.
- Some older people may not trust external support. This can make them feel vulnerable and alone. It is important to talk to older parents about their worries, being lonely, and also what is most important to them.
- For older people who enjoy socializing or being around people that are on the same journey as them, which is not offered by home care.
- Senior living communities such as ours offers an abundance of lifestyle programs 7 days a week, designed to fit the needs and wants of the residents living in our community and create connections with outside community partners, family and to each individual’s purpose. You will not find this in Home Care.
Mission Matters
Vista Prairie Communities is a mission-driven organization that has provided services and care to older adults for over 25 years. The care, programs and culture in our communities are guided by our mission, vision, values, and Aspire Lifestyle.
Lifestyle of Senior Living
When you live at a Vista Prairie community, you are family. You are an integral part of the community and have a say in the programs offered. We get to know your interests, passions, and gifts when you move in, and we help develop a plan to keep you active and gain purpose.
It’s maintenance-free living, the spiritual services, the full calendar of events and activities, learning and growth opportunities, having supports with any needs, and so much more.
Most people cannot afford 24/7 live-in home care, so what often happens is, caregivers come to the home, provide the care and leave. This takes care of the seniors' physical needs, but their emotional, mental and social needs are left unmet. We believe living in a community is the better option. Move into senior living helps keep you as independent as you’re able with continuing care options as you age, and your abilities change.
